TIPS FOR SAVING ENERGY AT MEEETINGS AND EVENTS

Reducing electrical usage at a meeting is one of the most important ways to promote sustainability and lower energy costs. Here are some effective strategies to achieve this goal:

1.    Optimize lighting: Use natural lighting whenever possible by holding the meeting in a room with windows. If artificial lighting is necessary, use energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs, and turn off lights in areas not currently in use.

2.    Adjust thermostat settings: Set the heating or cooling to an appropriate level for comfort but avoid extreme temperatures. Lowering the thermostat in the winter and raising it in the summer can significantly reduce energy consumption.

3.    Unplug devices: Encourage attendees to unplug chargers, laptops, and other electronics when not in use. Many devices continue to draw power even when not actively charging, known as "phantom power" or "standby power."

4.    Use power strips: Plug multiple devices into power strips so that they can be easily switched off when not required, such as during breaks or after the meeting ends.

5.    Work with your AV provider to use energy-efficient equipment: When selecting equipment for presentations or demonstrations, choose devices with ENERGY STAR ratings or other energy-efficient certifications.

6.    Go digital: Minimize paper usage by providing digital agendas, handouts, and presentation materials. Use electronic devices instead of printed copies to reduce waste and save energy.

7.    Shorten meeting duration: Keep meetings focused and on schedule to avoid unnecessary energy consumption from extended meeting times.

8.    Consider venue options: If possible, choose meeting venues that have sustainable practices in place, such as energy-efficient HVAC systems, lighting, and renewable energy sources or are LEED certified.

9.    Engage your attendees in the process:  Inform meeting participants about the importance of energy conservation and how their actions contribute to reducing the organization's overall carbon footprint.

By implementing these strategies, you can significantly reduce electrical usage during meetings and promote a more eco-friendly and sustainable work environment.
